During the 28th congress of the Mongolian People’s Party (MPP), party delegates elected a new party chairman, amended the party’s constitution, and agreed to increase the number of party conference members from 310 to 369. The party also raised the women representation quota on the conference’s seat from 24 percent to 30 percent. The congress delegates nominated Prime Minister U.Khurelsukh, MPP’s caucus chairman D.Khayankhyarvaa, former Cabinet Secretariat J.Munkhbat, and N.Demberel, an advisor to the general secretary of MPP, for the party chairmanship election. J.Munkhbat and N.Demberel withdrew their nominations at the congress. The charmanship race took place between U.Khurelsukh and Khayankhyarvaa. As U.Khurelsukh won the race with 63 percent vote from 1,309 members, he was elected as the new chairman of the MPP. The two nominees introduced their action plans to the delegates before a final vote was taken. U.Khurelsukh noted that the party needs to carry out a “mental” reform first and operational reform second. The nominee added that he will keep the party away from financial dependence if he becomes chairman. As part of the congress, outgoing chairman of MPP M.Enkhbold addressed his party reform and future plans to the congress delegates and underlined that the party needs to carry out a reform continuously. M.Enkhbold underlined that strengthening discipline, ensuring accountability, being free from corruption and strengthening adherence to the law at all levels of governance are the pillars of the party’s success. He added that MPP should maintain state policies and operations, and ensure political stability.
