President’s portrait auctioned for 5 million MNT

The Mongolian president’s portrait created by A.Khairat, a young artist from Bayan-Ulgii Province, was auctioned for 5 million MNT. The portrait was created in the modern art style called String art, or pin and thread art, characterized by an arrangement of thread strung between points to form geometric patterns, representational designs or portraits. Thread, wire, or string is wound around a grid of nails hammered into a wooden board. A total of 1,200 nails and approximately 750 meters ofthread were used forthis 90x70 cm sized portrait of the president and it took A.Khairat 10 days to complete it. A.Khairat previously crafted other string artworks such as “Abai”, “Kazakhyn baatar”, and “Khuleg mori”. A.Khairat found inspiration from Kyrgyz artist Azamat Janaliev who crafted the portrait of President Kh.Battulga and presented it to him. Janaliev said, “I met with the president of Mongolia. He was surprised by my gift. I wanted to present it to him to wish a long friendly relationship between Mongolia and Kyrgyzstan. This picture took me a week to make,” after handing his artwork to Kh.Battulga. In return, the president gave Janaliev a bronze sculpture of a Mongolian warrior and a book called “Mongolian Records”. Janaliev is famous for his string arts depicting the world’s leaders of the past and present time.
