Parliament accepts D.Gantulga’s resignation

The youngest lawmaker in Parliament, D.Gantulga, handed his resignation letter to Speaker of Parliament M.Enkhbold on June 11 and the Parliament’s State Structure Standing Committee accepted the lawmaker’s request. On June 14, Parliament reviewed the young lawmaker’s request, and none of the lawmakers representing in the Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) in Parliament commented on D.Gantulga’s resignation. MPs L.Bold and J.Batzandan of the Democratic Party (DP) stressed that the MPP is trying to put forward a proposal about increasing the age requirement for parliamentarians using D.Gantulga’s case, and the DP is against the MPP’s stance to raise the current minimum age requirement of 25 for parliamentary election candidates to 30 or 35. They noted that the MPP is making an attempt to restrict youth’s constitutional rights to be elected as well as shrink youth participation in the legislature. The two lawmakers emphasized that as a large percentage of the country’s population is made up of youth, promoting youth participation in all levels, even the legislature, is important. Head of the task force on constitutional amendments D.Lundeejantsan said increasing the age requirement for parliamentarians is not a MPP initiative but a public initiative, as many people put forward a proposal requiring parliamentary election candidates to be at least 30 years of age to the task force during open discussions on constitutional amendments, which took place across the country last year. The task force has included the proposal in the draft constitutional amendments, but it is not a final decision and is still in discussion, he added. As 45 out of 60 lawmakers in attendance (75 percent) accepted D.Gantulga’s resignation, he has lost his legislative immunity and the court will not have any barriers to investigate him regarding allegations of rape. As D.Gantulga’s resignation was accepted by Parliament and 75 legislators remain in the legislature, a parliamentary election will take place in Khentii Province this summer to replace D.Gantulga.
