Khentii special election to take place on June 30
A parliamentary session in progress

Parliament made a decision to hold a special election to fill the empty seat in Parliament from Khentii Province’s Kherlen, Murun and Jargaltkhaan soums last October, but the Constitutional Court ruled that if the special election takes place in 2018, it would violate the Constitution and the Law on Elections, which is why the special election was moved to this year.

On February 2, Parliament made the final decision on when the election will be held.

As Section 20.1 of the Law on Elections states that a special election to replace a lawmaker or a local representative must take place on the last Sunday of June or on the first Sunday of October of each year, Parliament chose to hold it on Sunday, June 30 as it is the closest possible date under the law.

The General Election Commission will start preparations for the upcoming special election next week.

Parliament also reviewed the budget for the election and has set a budget of 287.6 million MNT, which will be funded through the Government Revenue Fund.
