Residents offers to fund Khonkhtoi makeover

Ulaanbaatar Mayor S.Amarsaikhan made an order to landscape the 1.6-hectare park situated south of Sukhbaatar Square, referred to as Khonkhtoi, at the cost of 3.2 billion MNT, which is currently in progress. The Ulaanbaatar Urban Landscaping Department underlined that preparations have been made at the Ulaanbaatar mayor’s order and landscaping of the park will be completed by June 5. The new park will have a large green space and an 85-meter long fountain at its center.

Residents have been critical of the high cost of the renovation amid the crisis brought about by COVID-19 and questioned whether it was really necessary.  Head of Altan Dornod Mongol LLC T.Ganbold over Facebook post announced his interested to fund the landscaping of the park.

“We mustn’t spend 3.2 billion MNT for the landscaping near Sukhbaatar Square due to the current serious situation. This money has to be used for a new hospital. Ulaanbaatar Mayor S.Amarsaikhan, you have to hear the people’s voices. I can do this required landscaping for the public if you agree.” Ulaanbaatar S.Amarsaikhan on April 6 said, “I saw T.Ganbold’s request to landscape part of Sukhbaatar Square with his own money. I would like to thank T.Ganbold, a citizen who made a business proposal at this time. Currently, we haven’t received an official proposal from him, but we are ready to discuss it with him about the landscaping in Sukhbaatar Square. For the first time, a mining company in Mongolia has offered to take over the landscaping in Ulaanbaatar. We will exchange views within the law in the future. It's important to ensure public participation in both areas to save public funds.”
