Domestic violence rose 57%.

The General Police Department reported that the number of calls related to domestic violence increased during the COVID-19 restriction period. A total of 43,823 calls were received and addressed by the police since February 13.

Senior specialist of the Domestic Violence Division of the General Police Department A.Munkhsuvd said, “Compared with the same period of the previous year, total calls were down by 11.3 percent, but calls related to infringement increased by 8,517 or 75.6 percent. In the past two months, the police received a total of 7,468 complaints of regarding domestic violence. This is an increase of 57.2 percent compared to last year. However, 137 criminal complaints and 7,331 complaints regarding infringements were registered. As a result, the number of criminal complaints decreased by 8.1 percent and the number of infringements increased by 59.3 percent compared to the previous year. About 90 percent of domestic violence crimes and injuries affect the health of others.”

In some countries around the world, the rate of domestic violence increased during the coronavirus quarantine. For instance, domestic violence calls increased by 30 percent in France, 25 percent in Argentina, and 35 percent in Singapore, local media reported. 

“According to the Law on Domestic Violence, there are subjects who are obliged to report crimes and offenses of domestic violence. In particular, all levels of school staff, teachers, medical professionals, non-governmental organizations and civil servants are required to report to the police. Most of the domestic violence reporters were neighbors or other people.
