52 km cycling lane to be built

The Ulaanbaatar Road Development Office on Monday held an e-press conference on projects related to road construction and road maintenance planned this year. Deputy Head of the Ulaanbaatar Road Development Office B.Indra, Head of the Policy and Coordination Department of the office O.Enkhbaatar, and other related officials were in attendance.

This year, 30 projects funded through the state budget, nine by Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office, 83 by the capital city road fund, 36 by local development fund, and three by foreign funding will be implemented. A 52.5 km cycling lane is planned to be built in Ulaanbaatar, 17.5 km of intersections will be expanded, and a 178.6 meter long bridge will be repaired. Four underpasses will be built to reduce traffic congestion.

Deputy Head of the Ulaanbaatar Road Development Office B.Indra said, “Traffic movement is increasing day by day in the city. Most new roads will be built in ger areas to reduce traffic congestion. Ramps for people with disabilities are planned to be built in 175 locations. Road signs will be improved. Scheduled maintenance work will be carried out in accordance with traffic safety standards. Public transport stops will be built in nine new locations. The Sonsgolon and Yarmag bridges have been commissioned. The Nalaikh road will continue to be paved. If there aren’t any road closures, this road will be fully operational this year.”

In Ulaanbaatar, 52 km cycling lane will be build in Nalaikh and north of Bogd Mountain.  According to a recent survey, 39.3 percent of Ulaanbaatar residents use public transportation, 6.5 percent walk, 2.6 percent use taxis, 2.4 percent use bicycles, and 49.2 percent use private cars. Building cycling lanes will help reduce traffic congestion, official noted.
