16.5 million MNT to be spent on 2020 local election

On October 2, the Ulaanbaatar Election Committee reported on preparations for the elections of capital city, province, soum and district councils.

The total cost of organizing the local elections will be 16.5 billion MNT, and 483 million MNT will be spent on disinfection and sterilization to prevent the COVID-19 pandemic.

The GEC has worked with the International Republican Institute (IRI), Asia Foundation (AF), Zorig Foundation, Mongolian National Federation of the Blind (MNFB) and the Mongolian National Association of the Deaf to increase the participation of youth and people with disabilities in local elections.

In particular, IRI and AF are jointly implementing a program for youth, women, and people with disabilities to increase participation in local elections. “I have an offer” campaign was launched during the last parliamentary election, and “Minu Hata” campaign was launched on social media for the 2020 local election.

The Voter Education Center has trained young people to provide voter education to increase their participation in local elections.

Head of MNFB N.Gerel said, “People with disabilities have a hard time voting. We are working together on ways to ensure the confidentiality of the visually impaired and how to provide information about candidates.”

Sign language translations have been provided to increase the participation of deaf people in elections.
