On January 20, Khamba Lama of Gandantegchinlen Monastery D.Choijamts reported on bill on compensation for restoration of tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Buddhism.

A total of 54 lawmakers submitted the bill to Parliament on January 14, 2021. In order to restore the tangible and intangible cultural heritage of Buddhism, which became extinct in Mongolia from 1930 to 1940, the bill with six articles was drafted.

D.Choijamts said, “I was one of the people involved in drafting the bill. The bill on compensation specifically mentions Buddhism. Other religions have never been repressed in Mongolia. Here we are talking about repression. The bill is a big way for the government to fix its past. I think this is the right policy. There is no rich life in religion.”

“Gandantegchinlen Monastery, the center of Mongolian Buddhism, has a Council of Khamba Lamas consisting of 30 or 40 abbots from 21 provinces, traditional monasteries, and senior bishops from nine districts of the capital city. This council will monitor how the funds are spent in accordance with the law. Gandan Monastery pays seven or eight types of taxes, is audited once a year, and reports to the state. We can disclose our financial statements to the public.”
