The Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office is working with private companies to make fertilizers using waste and animal manure from slaughterhouses. City officials have signed a cooperation agreement with MCPT LLC, Eco Taikhi LLC and Usan Bolor Khangai LLC started to produce compost from animal waste. The Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office has provided land for receiving animal waste and processing fertilizers to the companies but they are fully responsible for raising necessary investment and operating costs of the fertilizer production project.

Compost fertilizer is an organic fertilizer made through the decomposition of  organic raw materials and wastes of plants and animals. It is said to have a higher content of molecular weight than other fertilizers and provides ample of nutrients to plants. It also has the advantage of having a long-term effect on soil structure and fertility, says an expert. 

MCPT is capable of producing 12,000 tons of fertilizer per year and the final compost fertilizer can be made ready in five to six months, the company’s general manager Ch.Purev highlighted. Eco Taikhi is using the new compost fertilizer to grow more than 10 types of plants and vegetables and test its effectiveness.

Head of Waste Management and Coordination Division of the Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office S.Ariguun said, “The fertilizer can be used for urban landscaping, suburban agriculture, and rehabilitation of soil pollution and degraded land. Experts say that recycling organic waste can help produce high-quality compost. The companies will conduct research and analysis to further improve the quality of fertilizers.”

Emeelt slaughterhouses in 32nd khoroo of Songinokhairkhan District have been generating large amounts of livestock waste, dumping them in the open, and polluting the area for many years. To resolve this issue, the Ulaanbaatar Mayor’s Office has been supporting enterprises and organizations to clean up the waste in the last four years. In addition, many measures have been taken to solve the problem of landfills, regular loading and transportation of waste. The city has fully stopped throwing away waste of animal origin in the open.
