Last week, ‘Digitalization in Mining Mongolia’ forum was held at the Shangri-La Hotel. The representatives of the mining companies participating in the conference emphasized the possibility of digital transition to bring the leading mineral sector in Mongolia’s economy to a new technological stage.
The Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Australia to Mongolia Katie Smith participated in the Digitalization in Mining Mongolia activity organized with the support of the Australian Governments Trade Commission (Austrade), the Mongolian Mining Association and the Mongolian Mineral Processing Association. She said, “Mining sector is important in ensuring the economic development and growth both to Mongolia and Australia. Investing in human resource capacity building and developing necessary skills is vital in developing innovation in the mining sector.” She then emphasized that as Australia’s mining industry is world leading in innovation and technological innovation in terms of sustainable development, increasing profitability, safety, and competitiveness of the industry, which is why they have a lot to offer and share to Mongolia in this field. The Ambassador also said that by improving production in mining, there are possibilities to increase human resources, productivity, and investment.
During the forum, Australian Maptek company donated a mine planning training software license worth 1.6 million AUD to Mongolian University of Science and Technology (MUST) and Mongolian-German Technological School, which trains mining personnels. In addition, representatives and experts from the management of DomainMCF and PETRA Data Science company presented the global trends of the latest technology based on AI such as cloud computing, machine learning, and IOT, as well as the experience introduced in the mining industry of countries.
Specialist at Maptek Simon Johnston created 3D modeling of deposits on the GeoSpatial Manager web-based platform using cloud computing and performed analysis updates. The possibilities and challenges of localizing these technologies in Mongolia’s mineral resources sector and mines, as well as the importance and digital infrastructure of our country, were discussed in the hall and online.
During the conference, teacher at MUST N.Dagvaa clarified about the digital transition of mining, “Nowadays, young people are attracted to mining. First, it’s because mining is related to the green economy, the new generation will see the future life in a meaningful way, and they will be interested in it. Second, when the IT industry enters the mining industry and becomes digital, young people start to automatically control the technology remotely, and they like it. Therefore, digitalizing mining, is becoming a wave to attract young people,” he emphasized.
