Record-breaking amount of cargo transported by UB Railway past decade

In Q1 2023, UB Railway managed to transport 8.1 million tons of cargo, which is an unprecedent achievement in the past decade. This achievement is happening thanks to facts that the difficulties of the pandemic are disappearing and the train exchange between Zamyn-Uud-Erenhot Port is increasing, which is the main export and import gateway of our country. Since the beginning of April, 15 trains have been sent per day to the Chinese side on the Zamyn-Uud-Erenhot Port broad-gauge railway because of UB Railway’s active collaboration with the railways of neighboring countries to increase train exchange. In last February, it was officially agreed to increase the exchange of broad-gauge trains from 14 to 15 per day with the Chinese side. In the future, if UB Railway works at this pace, it will break the historical record set before the COVID-19 pandemic, and it shows that there is a possibility of transporting 32 million tons of cargo in 2023.

REVENUE CREATED FROM TRANSPORTATIONS INCREASED BY 2.4 TIMES IN Q1

In the first quarter of this year, the revenue of air transport increased by 3.7 times, and the income of road transport increased by 2.6 times, while the revenue of railway transportation increased by 71 percent.

According to the National Statistics Office, the revenue of all transportation reached 705.3 million MNT, a 2.3-fold increase from the same period last year. This is thanks to the increase in the transportation of mining products, as well as the increase in air traffic.

The transportation of construction materials decreased due to inactive season, border conditions, and cargo transportation capacity, but after recovering from the last half of 2022, statistical indicators showed an increase, as well.

As for passenger transport, a total of 31.3 million people traveled in Q1 2023, which is a decrease of 7.6 percent from the same period last year. This is due to a double decrease in the number of passengers by public transport by two million people.

EXPORT ACCOUNTS FOR 38 PERCENT OF TOTAL CARGO TRANSPORTED
As of last week, UB Railway had transported 9.8 million tons of cargo, which is 2.2 million ton increase than the same period last year. Last week, a total of 623,600 tons of cargo was transported. From the total cargo transported last week, 202,000 tons of cargo was local, 235,300 tons were for export, 80,100 tons were imported, and 106,200 tons were transit cargo.

Of these, export cargo alone accounted for 37.7 percent.

Moreover, from the beginning of 2023 until last week, a total of 811 trains passed through Mongolia. Of these, 396 trains traveled from Russia to China, and 415 trains traveled from China to Russia.
