Lack of human resources in tourism industry highlighted

                                                                                                                                      The eighth morning meeting within the framework of the “New Revival Policy” of the Government of Mongolia was held with the Minister of Environment and Tourism B.Bat-Erdene on June 20. The meeting was held under the topic “Human resources and stability in the tourism industry” with representatives of universities, employers, and students.

Due to COVID-19 in the tourism sector, tour operators lost 78 percent, tourist centers 68 percent, hotels 25 percent, and restaurants 50 percent of their human resources. However, 16 universities train experts in this field, and in 2007, 7,251 students graduated, while in 2022, it decreased to 979. This is because the tourism industry only works in the summer, there are no stable jobs, most of the students are from Ulaanbaatar, and they do not want to work in the local area, they prefer to study and work in foreign countries.

Since 2007, selection of tourism profession has decreased by 87 percent. Therefore, the tourism industry has announced a scholarship of 400,000,000 MNT for students who choose a profession in this field. The campaign to influence the selection of the tourism profession is launched at a time when the General Entrance Exam is taking place all over the country.

Moreover, representatives of the industry said that it is essential to choose the tourism industry from rural areas, create local identity and branding, and develop tourism based on local people, tourism companies should receive tourists not only during the summer months, but all four seasons of the year, and create sustainable tourism and jobs.
