On September 3, Prime Minister L.Oyun-Erdene attended the inauguration of the 10MW solar power plant “Serven” in Yesunbulag soum of Gobi-Altai province, during his visit there.

The government is working on the goal of creating energy independence and adding environmentally friendly energy sources within the energy recovery framework of the Vision-2050 long-term development policy and the New Revival Policy. In this context, the “Serven” 10 MW solar power plant in Yesunbulag soum of Gobi-Altai Province was built by “MCS International” LLC with the funding of 10.4 million USD from the Asian Development Bank and put into operation

recently. About 10 percent of Mongolia’s territory is suitable for wind energy use. Covering more than 70 percent of the total territory, the steppes and Gobi deserts have long hours of sunshine and huge reserves of clean energy, so they can be used to meet the energy consumption of the region. Prime Minister L.Oyun-Erdene pointed out that the “Serven” solar power plant proves this and noted that it is possible for Mongolia to get out of energy dependence and expand its economy by using this advantage in the future. The government is implementing major energy projects such as Egiin and Erdeneburen Hydropower Plants, and Tavantolgoi Power Plant as part of the New Revival Policy. PM emphasized that with the full implementation of these projects, energy will soon become one of the most developed areas.

With the commissioning of “Serven” solar power plant, it will produce 18.4 million kWh of electricity per year, improve the electricity supply of 16,000 households in Govi-Altai Province, reduce the loss of power transmission lines, and increase the water resources of the reservoir in the Taishir HPP dam. It will save 16,000 tons of carbonic acid gas, 11,000 tons of coal, and 145,000 tons of water annually.

Prime Minister L.Oyun-Erdene also got acquainted with the operation of Taishir hydropower plant. With the commissioning of Taishir HPP, 250 million kWh of electricity was produced from 2008 to 2020, providing electricity to 43 villages and about 1,000 enterprises and organizations. Also, compared to traditional or diesel plants, it saved 700 to 750 MNT per kWh, creating income of 200 billion MNT in the state budget, fully covering the initial cost, and saving enough to build two more HPPs.
