Mongolia shines light on climate challenges by going dark

The young and old dimmed their lights and lighted candles for an hour from 8:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. at Sukhbaatar Square on Saturday in observance of Earth Hour. All street lamps and lights around the square were turned off as trumpets, drums and string instruments chimed and circus troopsentertained the audience in candlelight. The event was organized by the World Wildlife Fund Mongolia, Energy Regulatory Commission, Zorig Foundation, Baigal Orchnii Manlailagchid (Environmental Leaders) NGO, Arig Bank, and Ulaanbaatar Environment Office. The event is part of the global initiative dedicated to save the planet from the ill effects of Global Warming, raise awareness of need to take action on climate change, increase support for biodiversity, and promote sustainable energy consumption. Starting as a symbolic lights out event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour is now the world’s largest grassroots movement for the environment, inspiring millions of people to take action for our planet and nature. As accelerating climate change and staggering biodiversity loss threaten our planet, Earth Hour 2018-2020 endeavors to spark never-before-had conversations on the loss of nature and the urgent need to protect it. The global initiative strongly encourages people to push for environmentally-friendly laws and policies, and crowdfund for a better future.
