Bogd Khaan Mountain trails impacted by extreme weather conditions

The administration overseeing the protected areas of Bogd Khaan Mountain has issued an advisory to the residents of the capital city, urging them to be cautious when navigating the mountain’s trails and routes. Recently, there has been a marked increase in incidents involving the falling of trees and bushes, primarily due to lightning strikes, landslides, and strong winds triggered by intense rainfall. These adverse weather conditions have frequently led to the damage of paths and trails, thereby significantly escalating the risk of hikers sustaining injuries or becoming trapped under fallen trees.

Environmentalists have observed that 59 percent of the trees in the Bogd Khaan Mountain protected area are old, and 25 percent are middle-aged, which heighten the risk of such incidents in extreme weather conditions.

In the past week alone, heavy rains caused numerous trees to fall on the trails in the Dugui Tsagaan and Tsetsee Gun areas, leading to the closure of several hiking routes. In response, staff from the protected area administration, along with local residents, worked to clear the fallen trees along the Manzushir-Tsetsee Gun, Turkhurakh-Tsetsee Gun, and Zaisan-Dugui Tsagaan routes, making them accessible for hikers once again. However, the staff have warned that similar risks may arise in the future. Additionally, due to the heavy rains, many hiking trails have become flooded, and landslides have increased, further raising the risk of slipping and falling.
