Railway freight transportation increases

Ulaanbaatar Railway (MTZ) reported that it has transported 5.8 million tons of freights as of April 2016, which is a 2.7 percent increase compared to the same period of 2015. The Ministry of Roads and Transportation underlined that railway is the nation’s main transportation means. The ministry said that in order to increase transit transportation and increase its efficiency, regulations need to be made on transportation tariff. MTZ believes that in order to increase the competitiveness of railway transportation, the freight tariff policy needs to be revised. In August 2015, MTZ increased freight tariffs for non-ferrous and ferrous metals transportation by 20 percent, and tariff for building materials, hay, and home appliances by 10 percent. MTZ transported 837,300 passengers in the first four months of 2016, and noted that it is a decreased figure compared to 2015.
