Three convicted for the murder of S.Zorig

On December 27, B.Sodnomdarjaa, T.Chimegee, and Ts.Amgalanbaatar have been convicted to 25, 24, and 25 years in prison for the murder of S.Zorig after five days of closed trial at Sukhbaatar District Criminal Court. B.Sodnomdarjaa was convicted of conspiring to commit violent murder in order to cover up another murder, and contributing to the delinquency of a minor. He was sentenced to 25 years of imprisonment. T.Chimegee was convicted of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and intentional murder, and was sentenced to 24 years in prison. Ts.Amgalanbaatar was charged for repeated murder, and for covering-up a crime. Ts.Amgalanbaatar is to carry out 20 years of his imprisonment in a Gyandan, a type of prison in Mongolia, which operates under very specific and strict rules. The remaining time will be carried out at a high-security prison camp. The 484 days the three spent in captivity will be deducted from the prison sentence. The attorneys or families may repeal within 14 days. S.Zorig, who was a democratic revolution hero, was violently murdered in October 1998. His murder had remained a mystery for 18 years. S.Zorig’s wife D.Bulgan is the only witness to the crime. D.Bulgan didn’t participate in the trial as witness. She was arrested in November 2015 in relation to the investigation of her husband’s murder and released in September 2016 with no charges against her, and no official statement was made about her detention. In an interview shortly after the assassination of her husband, D.Bulgan said that there were two assailants, a man and a woman both of whom she’d described to be around 40 years of age. Ts.Amgalanbaatar would have been 16 and B.Sodnomdarjaa would have been 23 at the time of the murder. T.Chimgee would have been in her early twenties in 1998.
