This lake, named the Blue Lake of Black Heart, is situated south of Mount Khar Zurkh 1,675 meters above sea level. The fresh watered lake, consisting of two lakes that are linked underground, is located near Tsenkher River, 35 kilometers north from the main road in the eastern region and northwest from Tsenkher Mandal soum in Khentii Province. Lake Khukh is surrounded by natural beauty and abundant species of animal and vegetation. The lake is also where Temuujin was enthroned as the ruler of united tribes of Mongolia and given the title “Chinggis Khaan”, which means Oceanic Great Ruler, in 1189. Lake Khukh and Mount Khar Zurkh are one of the key places mentioned in the Secret History of Mongols, a chronicle book of Chinggis Khaan’s life. On a bank of the lake, there is a monument dedicated to the 840 anniversary of Chinggis Khaan’s birth and woodcrafts of 36 royal or golden lineage rulers were placed in a crescent-shaped area with a diameter of 108 meters surrounding the monument. Woodcrafts of Chinggis Khaan, his father Yesukhei, mother Oulen, and his queen Borte Ujin have been displayed on the central part of the establishment. Boards with English and Mongolian inscription of a particular ruler and some events that took place during the era can be found in front of the woodcrafts of Mongolian rulers. This memorial complex consists of 50 woodcrafts, including the nine marshals of Chinggis Khaan, at two sides of the main gate. The stone ruins of a ger with a diameter of 15 meters on the south side of Lake Khukh is speculated to be the ruins of the palace ger where Chinggis Khaan was proclaimed ruler. Lake Khukh is quiet and peaceful, and a perfect place for hiking or meditating.
