Apartment for the blind commissioned

Ulaanbaatar residents living with visual impairment and blindness have started moving into a new apartment that meets their needs. The apartment for 90 households was built with a financing of 4.85 billion MNT from the state budget. The construction of the building began in 2015 and received additional financing from the state budget on September 2016. During the opening ceremony on September 20, Secretary of the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection G.Unurbayar stated, “The ministry has been carrying out many projects to resolve social issues facing people living with disabilities and support their employment. The apartment is one of the major projects we’ve been doing. We managed to commission the apartment by prioritizing its funding through the government action plan.” An apartment for the blind and visually impaired was first built in Mongolia in 1986. The apartment provided comfortable living conditions for 48 families. Now, 90 more families with a visually impaired or blind member will be able to live in a home that meets all their needs, officials stated. According to the Ministry of Labor and Social Protection, there are 100,993 people living with disabilities registered in Mongolia, which is estimated to take up 3.7 percent of the total population. Approximately 11,000 of these people are reported to be visual impaired
