Air quality labeled ‘unhealthy’ at Tolgoit, MNB and Amgalan

Air pollution across Ulaanbaatar is gradually worsening as the weather gets colder, according to real-time air quality indexes. The Real-time PM2.5 Air Quality Index labeled air pollution levels around Tolgoit, MNB, Amgalan and Nisekh as “unhealthy” on Sunday morning. The level of PM10 particulates hit 394 micrograms per cubic meter and PM2.5 level reached 331 micrograms per cubic meter at midnight in Tolgoit area, which is one of the most polluted areas in Ulaanbaatar with PM2.5 levels ranging between 1,000 and 2,000 micrograms per cubic meter in previous winters. The index has been continuously showing “unhealthy” sign since. By 3:00 p.m. on October 15, the “moderate” level of pollution sign was lighted in Tolgoit, Nisekh, Bayankhoshuu, and MNB air quality monitoring stations, except at the Amgalan station where the air pollution remained “unhealthy”. At the time, the reading displayed that the PM10 particulates reached 114 micrograms per cubic meter, while PM2.5 reached 95 micrograms per cubic meter. Below are the highest readings recorded from October 14 at 0:00 a.m. to October 15 at 3:00 p.m.
