Preventive measures taken for measles

The first confirmed case of measles in our country was reported on July 31, marking the onset of a new health concern. Since that initial diagnosis, a total of four individuals have been affected by the disease. Of these cases, two were linked to international travel, having been imported from abroad, while the remaining two were contracted within the country. As we have reported earlier, the very first case of measles was detected in a person who had recently arrived in Ulaanbaatar City from Kazakhstan. Subsequently, two individuals who provided services to this traveler also contacted the illness.

In addition, there has been one suspected case of measles, although this case has yet to be confirmed by laboratory tests. The authorities have conducted tests on close contacts of the suspected case, and all results have returned negative. These individuals are currently under home observation to ensure that the disease does not spread further.

Given that measles is known to be highly contagious, with a transmission rate of 96-98 percent, it is imperative to exercise heightened caution and implement effective preventive measures. In response to the emerging situation, the Ministry of Health has proactively organized comprehensive training sessions. These sessions have involved over 800 medical professionals, including doctors and specialists from both the capital city and rural areas. During these training programs, detailed protocols were established for immediate action in the event of a suspected measles case. Medical professionals were instructed to administer vitamin A supplements as a preventive measure, particularly for children and pregnant women, who are at higher risk.

In addition, the National Center for Communicable Diseases and local health clinics are actively administering measles vaccinations to children. Experts are also recommending that children under the age of two, who have not yet received their mandatory vaccinations, receive the measles vaccine as a precautionary measure.

However, as of now, vaccinations for adults have not yet begun. This delay is attributed to the lack of a formal directive from the authorities and organizations in charge. In the meantime, relevant experts are undertaking a third comprehensive risk assessment to evaluate the situation and determine the necessary steps to effectively manage and contain the outbreak. Moreover, the ongoing situation highlights the importance of vigilance and preparedness in managing communicable diseases. The steps being taken by health authorities and medical professionals aim to curb the spread of measles and protect the public health. By addressing both immediate concerns and long-term prevention, the goal is to mitigate the impact of the disease and safeguard the well-being of the community.
