New wave in Mongolian fashion

By Elise Honningdalsnes Her inspirations for designing clothes come from Mongolian lifestyle, traditional clothing, Mongolia’s beautiful nature and the countryside. Urangoo Ider established her own designer brand in 2014 and has since won the title best designer in the category “casual wear” several times, both in Mongolia and Italy. Fashion in Mongolia is becoming a bigger business every day, leaving more room for aspiring young designers. Urangoo is one of the lucky ones who have managed to establish her own brand here in Mongolia. She has shown off her clothes several times internationally and she is doing well in the tough business. Urangoo Ider has designed about 2,000 pieces of clothing in 14 different collections over seven years. At the moment, Urangoo is selling her clothes in Mongolia and Italy, but she is soon to open an online store. Currently, her clothes can be bought at Gumuda and Lhamour Creative Store here in UB. The designer only wears her own clothes and the current color of all the clothes she wears is black and white, the same as her new collection. All her clothes need to be comfortable, high quality and with a unique design. It is important for her to stand out from the crowd. According to herself, her design stands out from other Mongolian brands because she works on every detail and she is inspired from the nature and traditional Mongolian clothes. Each detail has a meaning and the style comes from her heart. “I don’t want to copy anyone, and I try to keep the clothes natural with minimal colors,” Urangoo says, “I try to explain my inner feelings through my designs.” Urangoo graduated from the CITI Institute as the top student in her class. After that she worked for Shilmel Zagvar in Ulaanbaatar before going to Seoul, South-Korea. There she continued her studies in both foreign language and she studied how to start her own business at Kookmin University. She started her designer brand Urangooider upon her return to UB and she has later participated in fashion weeks in Mongolia, Canada, Russia and Italy. “I started my own business in 2014, but before that I did creative design,” Urangoo says, “It’s always been my hobby. I was always drawing when I was little, and when I grew up I started thinking about how I could make money from it,” she says. Urangoo describes her style as messy, due to a messy way of thinking. All her clothes have many details, and they all have a meaning. When combined, the meaning changes. Her favorite designer is Yohji Yamamoto from Japan. “I also love Coco Channel’s philosophy, but not the clothes,” she says, “and I love Roberto Cavalli, even though many people hate him because he only uses real material. I like that about him.” Urangoo designs all kinds of clothes and she is currently working on bags and shoes as well. Her lingerie collection will be shown off at The VIP Lingerie & Fashion Show 2016, on October 5th at One Event Hall Mongolia. Urangoo is planning to do her master’s degree in a European country when her brand is well-established here in Mongolia. After that she will continue her career. “I have big plans for the future,” the fashion designer says.
